The Underground Venues of Amsterdam: A Techno-Lover's Map

Amsterdam's reputation as a global electronic capital isn't built on one superclub — it's built on a scattered constellation of them: converted bus garages, a basement under a riverside tower, an old dental school, shipping-container boxes and canal-side halls that predate house music itself. Here's a working map of where the sound lives, organized by neighborhood, so you can plan a night — during ADE or any weekend of the year.

The historic institutions (Centrum)

Paradiso — a former church turned legendary music hall just off Leidseplein. Stained glass above a heaving floor; it hosts everything from live acts to full-blooded electronic nights, and is an ADE fixture.

Melkweg — "The Milky Way," a multi-room cultural institution running since 1970 in an old dairy. Several stages, wildly varied programming, and a rite of passage for anyone in Amsterdam nightlife.

Amsterdam Noord: across the IJ

Shelter — the city's essential underground room, tucked underneath the A'DAM Tower by the water. Dark, low-ceilinged, serious about sound and about a no-nonsense dance-floor culture. Take the free ferry behind Centraal.

Garage Noord — a smaller, forward-leaning space open since 2017, known for experimental bookings and a genuinely local crowd. Where you go to hear what's next, not what's charting.

Amsterdam West & Nieuw-West: the industrial belt

RADION — a former dental-technician institute turned 24-hour art-and-music complex. Multiple rooms, long licenses, and a home for the harder, deeper end of techno.

Lofi — a ~1,500-capacity club in a repurposed bus garage, one of the bigger dedicated house-and-techno rooms in the west.

Thuishaven — a seasonal, open-air-meets-warehouse fairy-tale of a venue: bonfires, art installations and marathon house and techno sessions in an industrial yard.

BRET — a striking red box built from shipping containers, serving house, techno and tech-house to Amsterdam's west.

Radio Radio — a house-focused room at the Westergasterrein, part of the buzzing Westergas cultural park.

Gashouder (Westergasfabriek) — the cavernous former gas-holder that hosts marquee productions, most famously Awakenings. Not a weekly club, but a bucket-list room when the big events roll in.

Amsterdam East

Doka — the intimate basement beneath the Volkshotel, leaning house and disco, ideal for a closer, sweatier night.

The arena tier (Zuidoost)

When productions go big, they head southeast to the arena cluster: AFAS Live (where Jean-Michel Jarre opens ADE 2026), the Ziggo Dome, and the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Not underground — but where the headline spectacles happen.

Ghosts of the scene

Part of understanding Amsterdam is knowing what came before. De School — the beloved 24-hour club in a former technical school — and, earlier, Trouw, set the template for the city's long-license, music-first ethos before they closed. Their DNA lives on in the venues above.

How to actually use this map

Cluster your night by geography — Noord together, West together — so you're not crossing the city at 3am. Respect each room's culture (many are strict about phones on the floor; see our nightlife etiquette guide), and during ADE, check which promoter has taken over which space on the calendar — the venue is only half the story; the line-up behind the takeover is the other half.

Venues open, close and change hands — we keep this map current, but always check the venue's own channels before you head out.
