ADE 2026 First-Timer's Survival Guide
Your first Amsterdam Dance Event can feel like drinking from a firehose: 1,000+ events, five days, a whole city on the move, and a schedule that runs until sunrise. Do it well and it's the best week of the year. Do it blind and you'll spend it in queues and confusion. Here's everything a newcomer needs to know for ADE 2026 (21–25 October) — the 30th-anniversary edition. For the big-picture overview, pair this with our Ultimate Guide to ADE 2026.
1. Understand what you're buying
The number-one first-timer mistake is confusing the two ADEs. ADE Pro is the daytime conference (panels, networking, keynotes — including Jean-Michel Jarre's this year) and needs a Pro pass. ADE Festival is the nightlife, and every club night, warehouse party and arena show is ticketed separately by its own promoter. A Pro pass does not get you into parties. If you're here to dance, you want event tickets, not a Pro pass.
2. Book early — everything
The best Saturday events sell out weeks ahead, and beds in the city get scarce and expensive during ADE week. In order of urgency: book your accommodation, then your must-see Saturday event, then the rest of the week. Buy from official sources — Resident Advisor, Ticketmaster, or the venue/promoter directly — and use only official face-value resale if you miss out.
3. Plan a realistic week (you cannot do everything)
Five nights of 6–8 hour parties is a marathon, not a sprint. A sane approach: pick one anchor event per night, leave room to follow friends or a recommendation, and protect at least one earlier night so you're not wrecked by Saturday. Use our ADE 2026 calendar to build your shortlist as line-ups drop.
4. Sort transport before you go out
Amsterdam is small and most venues are 10–20 minutes apart. Locals bike; visitors lean on trams and the metro. Get an OV-chipkaart or tap in/out with a contactless card on GVB. Crucial detail: regular trams and metros stop around 00:30, so learn the Nachtbus (night bus) route back to where you're staying, or budget for the occasional taxi between far-apart venues (the arena cluster in the southeast vs. Noord warehouses, say).
5. Budget honestly
ADE isn't cheap, but it doesn't have to break you. Per day, roughly: €40–80 per event ticket, €15–30 food, €10–20 transport, plus drinks. Accommodation is the big variable — book early or stay slightly outside the center and commute in. Prefer a lighter spend? Plenty of excellent smaller nights and free/low-cost daytime events exist; you don't need the arena shows to have a great ADE.
6. Pack smart
- ID — you'll need it for entry; carry it, not your passport if you can avoid it.
- Comfortable shoes — you'll walk and stand for hours.
- Layers — late October in Amsterdam is cold and often wet; venues are hot. A cloakroom-friendly jacket is ideal.
- A charged phone + power bank — tickets, maps and your group chat all live here.
- Cash for coat check and the odd cash-only spot, though most places take card.
- Earplugs — the pros wear them; your ears will thank you on day three.
7. Know the etiquette
Amsterdam's clubs run on a shared code: respect the door, respect the room, and respect the "no phones on the floor" culture at many underground venues. Don't film sets end-to-end, don't shove to the front, and take conversations to the bar. We break down the full unwritten rules in Amsterdam Nightlife Etiquette — read it before your first night.
8. Look after yourself
Hydrate (free tap water is your friend), eat real meals, and pace the week. Amsterdam is safe and ADE is well-organized, but standard nightlife sense applies: mind your drink, keep your phone and ID secure, stay with your group, and always know how you're getting home. If something feels off, venue staff and security are there to help.
